Reflection on Video

Hand Your Troubles to Jesus

"The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.”

We don’t know what the future holds, but we do know who holds the future in His hands. We may be surprised by some turn of events, but God is never surprised. We may feel powerless to change the outcome, but God is all powerful. He can do what He pleases. He can change things for the better, starting with the way we think and feel about our problems. He can lift our spirits just as He lifted those of the apostles when He promised, “These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye may have peace. In the world ye have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16: 33)
. . . read more

“. . . I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth on me, though he die, yet shall he live.”

The way in which Martha reacted to the sickness and death of her brother, Lazarus, can be a source of inspiration for anyone struggling with the illness or death of a loved one.

First of all, as soon as her brother became ill, Martha sent word to Jesus, the Divine Physician. She acted as a healthcare advocate for her brother, who was too sick to care for himself. Today, more than ever, patients need a healthcare advocate to help them deal with insurance issues, gain access to the proper care and understand and follow their physician’s prescribed regimen.

Second, as soon as Martha heard Jesus was in the vicinity, she went in search of Him. She wasn’t angry with God. She didn’t blame Jesus for not answering her initial plea. Her faith was unshaken. With tears streaming down her cheeks, she approached Jesus, saying, “whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give you.” Patients are often too feverish and confused to pray for themselves. They need a caregiver who will intercede for them with God.

Third, Martha didn’t let her grief paralyze her. For a mourner to leave her home during the seven days of “sitting shiva” was contrary to Jewish burial custom. But Martha didn’t stand on ceremony. Her grief may have been unbearable, but she refused to let it bring her down.

In the face of Martha’s grief, Jesus was moved to tears. She brought Him to the tomb and Jesus brought Lazarus back to life.
