Bible Passage and Commentary
Yoked to the Lord: Matthew 11: 28-30
“For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
In Jesus’ day, most people earned a living by the sweat of their brow. In today’s service economy, the closest many of us come to feeling yoked to our jobs is during the long rush hour commute. Now a new CBS-TV series called “Undercover Boss” shows what happens when white-collar executives go undercover to discover what it’s like to work on the factory floor, behind the counter, in the shop and out in the field. None of them are very good at jobs they had assumed were easy to do. To a man, they are glad to get back to their corner office at the end of one week. The key lesson drawn from all these episodes is: there is no such thing as an unimportant job. Whether it’s the job of a sanitation worker, a retail clerk, a crane operator or a janitor, it’s essential work. Those who choose to take on those difficult and stressful jobs lighten our load. They deserve our respect. Why not thank one of them today?
